5 Ways to Have the Best Staycation Ever

Header

We’ve all been there before. You need a break from school and work, but you’ve got no budget to get away. While the buzzword “staycation”, may have gotten a bad rap the last few years, the idea behind it will allow you to play more and pay less. Added bonus: not having to travel anywhere frees up more time to relax! Here’s a few ways to make the most out of it.

1. Spoil Yourself with a Spa Day.

What better way to feel like you’re on vacation than being pampered? Set out a bucket of ice with a bottle of champagne (there’s no shame in André), put on your best bathrobe, light a few candles, and enjoy a relaxing bubble bath.  Take time out to give yourself a nice manicure and pedicure, or even go get a massage.  Don’t want to leave the house at all? Try the Soothe app to locate a massage therapist who will come to you.

2. Experience the Great Outdoors… Indoors.

Want to witness nature’s majesty, but hate the idea of sleeping on the ground? Transform your own living room into an incredible landscape! First, shelter yourself from the elements by setting up a tent or blanket fort to your liking. Next, add a little ambiance with some nature sounds. Moodil is just one of a number of great apps that can achieve this effect. Finally, use lanterns or flashlights to perfect your lightning. Once the atmosphere is all set up, you’re free to kick back with an outdoorsy movie and some s’mores!

3. Forget Plane Tickets and Take an Adventure Abroad at Home.

Decided not to study abroad this summer? That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s too late to experience another culture. Chances are, your area has at least a few varieties of authentic foreign cuisines. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even try cooking one of these meals yourself! Hulu and Netflix both have huge collections of foreign films, and Pandora has dozens of culturally-inspired radio stations. To get the most out of your time “abroad,” we recommend honing in on one specific nation or region.

4. Be a Tourist in Your Own Town.

Like many of us, have you gotten so comfortable in your city you’ve never taken the time to explore it? Shake things up a little and check out your city’s welcome center for ideas on how to be the best tourist in Your Town, USA.  Visit the small museums and galleries you’ve never seen before. Put on your nicest clothes, find a date, and step out on the town for a fancy dinner at a restaurant you would normally reserve for special occasions. Tour a brewery, a factory, a vineyard, or sign up for a walking food tour.  If that still doesn’t satisfy your appetite for tourism, find a neat spot in a different area of your town on VRBO or AirBNB.  You might be surprised at how many nooks and crannies of your town you’ve never seen!

5. Experience a Post-Apocalyptic World or Hang Out with Your 6 Best Friends.

So no one told you life was gonna be this way? *clap clap clap clap clap*

In any ordinary week, staying up all night to watch movies or have an epic video game spree means missing an important class the next day or, even worse, getting fired.  Brace yourself for staycation level laziness, put on your comfiest PJ’s, load up on junk food (Slim Jims, anyone?), and settle in for a night of Netflix binging and saving the planet.  Use Redbox to rent movies and video games, or sign up for GameFly to have the latest games delivered.   While you’re at it, make sure to have food scheduled for delivery in advance so you never have to touch the pause button!
